Schon als Kind liebt Whitney Houston es, mit ihrer Mutter Cissy (Tamara Tunie) in der Kirche zu singen. Auf die Idee, wie sie aus ihrer Leidenschaft fuer die Musik eine Karriere zu machen, kommt sie von selbst aber nie. Eines Tages bittet die erkrankte Cissy ihre mittlerweile erwachsene Tochter (Naomi Ackie), fuer sie bei einem Auftritt einzuspringen. Dabei befindet sich PlattenfirmenBoss Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) im Publikum. Er erlebt mit, wie Whitney das Publikum mit ihrer phaenomenalen Stimme begeistert und nimmt sie unter Vertrag. Schnell folgt ein Hit auf den naechsten und sie avanciert bereits mit ihrem Debuetalbum zum Idol von Millionen. Bei einer Preisverleihung lernt die junge Frau den fuer seinen unsteten Lebenswandel beruechtigten R und BSaenger Bobby Brown (Ashton Sanders) kennen. Die zwei verlieben sich ineinander und heiraten. Doch anstelle eines Happy Ends kommt alles ganz anders.
